Individually and together, our employees are dedicated to satisfying the mission of our organization which is an unwavering commitment to excellence as we care for the sick and injured; educate physicians, nurses and other health care providers; and improve access to care in the communities we serve, regardless of a patient's ability to pay for health care.The Bed Coordinator will prioritize and coordinate patient flow activity, bed placement, and inter/intra-facility transfers at St. Lukes Hospital Allentown, Anderson, Bethlehem and Quakertown Campuses with the assistance of a Registered Nurse. Responsible to be the initial contact for all providers who wish to admit an elective, urgent, or emergent patient into SLB and SLA campuses. The objective is to prevent inappropriate transfers while facilitating all others and facilitate the appropriate placement of inpatient admissions. This individual will also be the contact for follow-up on all transfers. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Answers all calls for transfers, direct admissions and emergency admissions in a timely fashion while demonstrating exceptional customer service and telephone etiquette. - Effectively utilizes medical appropriateness criteria for all urgent and emergent transfers/ admissions including treatment plan and reason for admission. - Contacts sending facility, patient family, or patient employer if additional insurance information is required. - Coordinates activities of the department and promotes cooperation to the staff to achieve department objectives and maintain good interdepartmental relations. - Promotes and maintains harmonious and effective working relationships within the hospital and with the public, (e.g., police, ambulance, clergy, others). - Assigns beds for new patient admissions and makes arrangements for emergency operations and other services which are available on an on-call basis. - Attends meetings as required including administrative meetings, committee and staff meetings. - Maintains professional growth and development through professional affiliations, seminars, workshops, conferences, etc. - Demonstrates a consistent level of performance; strives to maintain a steady level of productivity and provides a consistent effort. - Performs initial screen to assure all necessary insurance authorizations are obtained, if applicable. Initiates pre-certification if required. - Demonstrates proper procedure and knowledge of regulations for registration. - Communicates an orderly transfer of information with each shift change. - Facilitates bed cleaning and actively monitors beds for availability. - Coordinates placement of OR patients with PACU/ASC to minimize disruption to the OR schedule. - Communicates with Hospital Supervisor or Critical Care Coordinator for intervention as needed. - Facilitates communication between referring and receiving physicians and nursing units. - Provides recommendations for process improvement. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Sitting for up to 8-12 hours per day, one hour at a time. Standing for up to 1 hour per day, one hour at a time. Walking up to 1 hour per day, one hour at a time. Stooping, squatting, crouching, kneeling, and reaching above shoulder level rarely. Never crawling or climbing. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general and near vision. EDUCATION: High School Graduate TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Prior experience in Admissions helpful. Flexibility regarding job demands and scheduling necessary. Basic computer skills and telephone system skills are essential.
