The Director of Sterile Processing Department (SPD) supervises, assigns and directs all activities of personnel performing Sterile Processing functions. Has authority and responsibility for the operations of Central Sterile Processing Department, including staffing, budgets, customer service and productivity. Also ensures that strict and proper infection control procedures are followed for decontamination, sterilization, storage and transportation of equipment, and sterile supplies and instruments/sets utilized throughout the Network in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network. Plans, organizes, develops, coordinates, manages, evaluates and directs the daily operation and activities of all Sterile Processing for the Network. Maintains records and provides reports. Assures customer satisfaction.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, organizes, develops, coordinates, directs and evaluates the daily ongoing activities of the department.
  • Responsible for SPD Employees, Hiring, Orientation and Training, Staff retention, Employee Satisfaction, ensuring compliance with Hospital Policies and allocating appropriate staffing levels throughout the network.
  • Plans, prepares and manages the annual budget, promotes cost containment, and maintains supply and equipment inventories.
  • Formulates and/or revises departmental procedures, evaluates current products and researches new products, devices and equipment.
  • Responsible for the preparing and implementing Departmental Goals and Objectives.
  • Develops in-service education programs. Keeps informed of and communicates to staff current trends in sterile processing activities. Participates in infection, safety and quality control programs. Attends seminars, workshops, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of systems: Instrument Tracking, Case Cart, and Patient Charging, Materials Management (HEMM) and Budget, as they relate to the SPD department.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Actively seek cost savings and cost avoidance initiatives.
  • Coordinates the implementation of new products.
  • Requires daily contact with the Surgical Service Department professional staff, Physicians and other departments throughout the network.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Standing for up to 4 hours, up to 1 hour at a time. Walking for up to 4 hours per day, 1 hour at a time. Sitting for up to 6 hours per day, 2 hours at a time. Frequently uses fingers for filing and writing, etc. Occasionally uses hands for stocking of shelves, etc. Frequently uses upper extremities to lift up to 50 pounds. Frequently stoops, bends or reaches above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, peripheral vision and visual monotony. Occasionally pushing and pulling carts weighing up to 200 pounds.

EDUCATION:

R.N., L.P.N. or Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and/or 7-10 years supervisory experience in Sterile Processing Department.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Certified Central Service Manager. active Member of Professional Organization. Pesticide License. 7 years of experience in Sterile Processing Management Role with a minimum of 4 years in the Operating Room environment working with instruments. Thorough knowledge of Sterile Processing Infection Control and other Regulatory Guidelines and Regulations. Experience with leadership, conflict management, report writing, presentations. Knowledge of Materials Management computer, OR Computer System, Microsoft Excel/Access/Word experience required.
