Performs ultrasound patient examinations on patients based on procedures and under the directions of a perinatologist. The position requires a significant degree of judgement in the performance of assigned duties.

The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for the successful technical continuity care for patients during ultrasound procedure.

  2. Communicates to perinatologist clinical observations made during ultrasound examination.

  3. Presents clinical history as recorded on appropriate documentation to perinatologist.

  4. Assists perinatologist during invasive procedures performed using ultrasound guidance.

  5. Completes yearly-required competency assessments as set by the Ultrasound Manager.

  6. Ultrasound rooms are restocked on a daily basis at the end of the shift with laundry, SPD and

Store Room supplies. At the end of each study room should be cleaned and ready for the next patient.

  1. Must have knowledge of handling, disposal and clean up of spills of all HAZ-MAT materials in the Maternal Fetal Medicine.

  2. Accurately adheres to downtime procedures to assure appropriate information is available resulting in excellent continuity of patient care.

  3. Exhibits the ability to work with others, is considerate of others work ethics, follows and takes directions well.

  4. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled with the Network, as well as the proper release of information.

  5. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/Entity as well as the proper release of information.

  6. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

  7. Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).

  8. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

  9. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.

  10. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

  11. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in inservices and/or continuing medical education programs.

  2. Provides education information to patients regarding their examination without providing the patient with the final examination results.

  3. Will demonstrate knowledge pertaining to patient condition, history and appropriate medical background and information as it pertains to the examination to be performed.

  4. Assists in gathering and recording Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement Program.

  5. Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Frequent use of fingers and hands in operating equipment and for paperwork. Standing and walking for up to 7 hours per day in 60-minute increments. Sitting for up to 1 hour per day in 15-minute increments. Pushing, pulling and lifting patients and litters up to 300 pounds with assistance. Lifting and moving objects up to 40 pounds. Must be able to do frequent bends, stoops and crouches. Must be able to reach above shoulder level. Must be able to hear and see as it relates to normal hearing and vision.

POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:

  1. Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature.

  2. May be exposed to infection and/or contagious diseases when working with patients (risk minimized by adherence to universal precautions).

  3. There is potential risk for back injury due to lifting (risk minimized using body mechanics techniques according to the guidelines and inservices established by the Hospital Safety Officer).

  4. May have minimal exposure to hazardous chemicals (risk minimized by adherence to Right-to-Know Laws).

  5. There will be frequent exposure to electrical equipment (risk minimized by adherence to electrical safety procedures).

  6. Exposure to sharps during and after procedures (risk minimized by adherence to sharps use and disposal policy).

SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE: Impervious gowns, gloves, and mask.

MOST COMPLEX DUTY: Performing and assisting in procedures, communicating with patients, possesses knowledge necessary to operate and maintain all required imaging equipment.

SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO): Maternal Fetal Medicine physician and Maternal Fetal Medicine Manager

COMMUNICATIONS: Must be able to communicate effectively with department staff, hospital staff, Radiologists, staff physicians, patients and family members.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Needs to exhibit critical thinking skills, problem solving ability and interpersonal skills.

QUALIFICATIONS (MINIMUM)

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of an approved Radiology Technology Program and/or Ultrasound Program. RDMS required.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of one year experience in obstetrical ultrasound. Current CPR certification required. Knowledge of computer basics a must.

WORK SCHEDULE: Day shift with middle shift, depending on the needs of the department.
