Job Title: Nurse Manager, Emergency Department Profession:

experience in management and/or supervisory roles in the Emergency
Department License: Current license to practice as a Registered
Professional Nurse in New York State Certifications: BLS, ACLS,
PALS Must-Have: Emergency Department experience Description: The
Nurse Manager, Emergency Department assumes 24-hour responsibility
for the overall assessment, planning, implementation, and
evaluation of patient care. Responsibilities include oversight and
direction for the emergency department. Accountability for
planning, directing, leading, and evaluating nursing care within
the department is essential. Fostering an environment of
collaboration and respect among all other healthcare team members
is crucial. Weekend and holiday coverage as needed is also a
responsibility of the role. Operational performance duties include
developing long-term staffing schedules and ensuring adequate daily
coverage. Monitoring unit operational performance metrics,
including agency and overtime costs, vacancy and turnover rates, is
required. Overseeing the daily workflow, staffing, orientation,
training, and development of employees within the department is
essential. Responsible for ongoing quality and performance
improvement processes related to the emergency department.
Promoting and supporting a collaborative team approach in providing
care for all patients is vital. The manager should approach others
in a tactful manner and treat others with respect and
consideration. Supporting and interpreting policies, procedures,
and objectives of the organization is required. Monitoring customer
satisfaction scores and implementing plans to improve those scores
is expected. Monitoring patient volume, quality of care, and
performance of staff to identify areas for improvement is
necessary. Maintaining a departmental dashboard that tracks
information and progress on key areas is required. The nurse
manager is responsible for investigating complaints and concerns
from patients, physicians, and staff. Maintaining required
competencies for self and all employees within the department is
essential. Participation in a professional organization is
expected. Collaboration with nursing leadership to establish
nursing care standards and evaluate staff compliance is required.
Identifying protocols affecting the patient population served and
keeping nursing staff informed is vital. Demonstrating
self-development and staying current on clinical management and
healthcare topics is necessary. Ensuring a safe and caring
environment for patients, families, and staff is critical for
positive health education. Ensuring equal access to treatment for
all individuals, regardless of background, is a necessity.
Participation in the overall planning process for the service is
expected. Conducting monthly meetings with staff to discuss various
operational topics is required. Educating and evaluating staff on
procedures and systems is essential. Creating and maintaining an
atmosphere of respect and courtesy towards patients and colleagues
is crucial.
