Obtains blood specimens from outpatients using appropriate blood collection equipment (needles, lancets, etc.) according to Laboratory Specimen Collection Manual and Phlebotomy Procedure Manual. Performs EKG testing on outpatients.Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interprets verbal and written physician orders.
  • Obtains blood specimens from outpatients using appropriate blood collection equipment (needles, lancets, etc.) and follows safe practices according to the Laboratory Specimen Collection Manual and Phlebotomy Procedure Manual in a timely manner.
  • Identifies outpatients by having the patient repeat their name and birth date and comparing the information to physician request and labels (or registration form). Label specimens accurately.
  • Responsible for handling and processing laboratory specimens according to Accession Procedure Manual including operation of a centrifuge and proper specimen transfer and storage.
  • Performs equipment maintenance, computer entry, and communicates with hospital staff, physician offices.
  • Follows correct specimen packing for transport of specimens to the designated SLUHN laboratory.
  • -Handles stats appropriately. Forward all necessary information to the lab.
  • Provides phlebotomy coverage at varying workstations and when necessary, transports specimens back to the laboratory.
  • Train and orient new employees (including non-laboratory staff that require phlebotomy as a function of their job) in phlebotomy and specimen processing procedures. Teach and mentor student externs from affiliated health career programs.
  • Performs EKG's as necessary.
  • Demonstrate efficiency and familiarity with hospital systems in order to complete the -registration process and financially secure the patient's visit.
  • Access the Patient Management System and the Patient Tracking Board, accurately enters -information necessary to begin registration process.
  • Accurately completes the registration process for Lab (phlebotomy, cultures, specimens).
  • Accurately record in hospital computer system clean and concise notes to track patient account activity and to communicate finances with hospital patient care staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of current insurance regulations and policies. Responsible for contacting - -insurance companies to verify benefits when applicable.
  • Responsible for documenting copays and deductibles, -entering appropriate charges for services -rendered and -for accurate order entry for lab services.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory supplies for the reception area.Physical and Sensory Requirements: Ability to operate a motor vehicle to travel between St. Luke's University Health Network locations to collect specimens. In order to satisfy the physical requirements in a typical workday, employee must have the ability to sit for 0-2 hours. Manual dexterity is required in order to perform the essential functions of a phlebotomist. Education: - - - - - High School graduate or equivalent. Training and Experience: Two years phlebotomy experience required.
