This includes the functional responsibility for the day to day operation of all components of the department(s) and integration into the hospital's network, personnel, and planning, budgeting, marketing, clinical review and committee structure. Assumes leadership role in planning for the department(s) including but not limited to personnel, performance improvement, patient safety, regulatory compliance, programs/service, and physical plant issues. Interacts and facilitates the collaboration and cooperation of a multitude of internal and external partners in the delivery of emergency services, trauma service, inpatient managers, PAC, registration, behavioral medicine, finance, security, physicians, EMS, police, etc. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assumes 24-hour responsibility/accountability for planning, organizing, and supervising care necessary to assure patient safety and meet the needs of patients serviced by assigned department(s). * Participates in strategic planning process for emergency services. * Partners with emergency physician leadership to ensure clinical practice complies with established standards and regulatory requirements. * Facilitates relationship development with external and internal partners to ensure appropriate and timely delivery of emergency services (EMS, Trauma, Pharmacy, Lab, Registration, Security, Physicians etc?). * Participates as an active member of the ED network nursing leadership committee. Committee meets monthly to address the following network emergency department areas: clinical practice, policies and procedures, behavioral medicine, clinical documentation, PI, staffing, etc? * Establishes, implements and monitors SLB ED capacity plan and takes proactive steps to manage ED capacity in partnership with physicians, PAC, inpatient managers, etc... to ensure 24/7 provision of emergency services to the public and EMS providers. * Ensures accurate capture of financial data/charges for provided emergency department services. * Achieves > 90% patient satisfaction for the emergency department by developing and monitoring service initiatives.Performs direct administrative functions for assigned department(s).Develops, implements, and evaluates short and long range performance improvement and operational goals, and objectives for the department(s). * Implements policies, procedures, rules, regulations and recommended practices and ensures that clinical practice standards are met.Analyzes and responds accordingly to unit specific performance, outcome and financial data. * Develops capital and operational budgets in collaboration with Finance and Administration.Manages operational budgets in terms of expenses and revenue. Consistently makes recommendations to decrease overhead expenses and/or increase revenue. * Develops, evaluates and adjusts current and future staffing based upon patient care needs and initiates adjustments as needed; manages costs within budget. * Maintains departmental records for administrative and regulatory purposes. * Selects, motivates, and retains staff; initiates formal recognition plan.Facilitates unit based councils and participates in network councils. * Enhances job knowledge by remaining current in trends in the health care industry and specialty areas. Is a member of the ENA.Serves as a resource to staff.Develops and leads projects involving performance improvement. * Promotes and environment that fosters inquiry, creative thought, nursing education programs, and development and application of evidence-based practice initiatives. * Reviews performance of staff, assures staff competency and initiates remedial actions when appropriate.e * Ensures the development and maintenance of staff competencies and initial emergency department employee orientation. PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hours at a time. Stand for up to 10 hours per day; 3 hours at a time. Walking for up to 6 hours per day; ten minutes at a time. Consistently lift and carry objects up to 10 lbs. Frequently push objects up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lift, carry or push objects up to 50 lbs. Frequently stoop and bend. Occasionally squats. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must be able to perceived attributes of an object through touch. Frequently finger and handle objects. Occasionally firmly grasp, twist and turn objects with hands and fingers. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and visual monotony.. EDUCATION: Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the state of Pennsylvania. Bachelor in Nursing or a related health care field required upon hire or at time of promotion. Masters degree is preferred TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years clinical experience in emergency medicine and/or critical care with demonstrated leadership abilities required. Sound clinical knowledge in area to be managed. Strong interpersonal skills required. Demonstrate ability in Human Resources and Financial Resource management. Current BLS certification required.
